Day 2, Session 9 – Enzymes and plastic waste disposal (Haydon Ross and Brooke Wain)

Brooke Wain

As an industrially funded PhD student, Brooke commenced her research project in February 2022 under the supervision of Professor Andrew Pickford.

Her research is financially supported by the collaborative efforts of the University of Portsmouth and the Coca-Cola Hellenic Bottling Company, focusing on the enzymatic recycling of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) plastics, with the aim of contributing to the development of a sustainable solution for PET plastic waste management.

Prior to embarking on her PhD, she completed her Masters in Research within the Centre for Enzyme Innovation after obtaining her BSc in Biochemistry at the University of Portsmouth. While lecturing at the International College of Portsmouth, she also enjoys scientific collaboration and communication.

Outside academia, you’ll find her on the field hockey pitch or at the beach.

Haydon Ross

Haydon Ross is currently pursuing a Master of Research at the University of Portsmouth, focusing on polyethylene (PE) degrading enzymes. He earned his BSc (Hons) in Biochemistry from the same institution. Driven by a profound interest in biotechnology’s potential to address global climate challenges, Haydon is particularly enthusiastic about the broad applications of enzymes.

He has secured a PhD studentship at the University of Nottingham, where he will continue similar research starting in October. His PhD work will build on prior studies, focusing on the characterization and engineering of PE-degrading enzymes, with several highly promising candidates already identified by a previous PhD student at Nottingham University.
