Professor Richard Banati
Richard Banati (Professor & Chair, University of Sydney) is an internationally recognized scientist with interdisciplinary interests in the use of nuclear analytical techniques for the study of human disease, life-cycle-analysis of materials and pollutants, their environmental impact and remediation. His research includes the up-take of microplastics by marine life, their environmental impact and the traceability of associated toxins in the oceans.
From 2008-2023, Professor Banati was the Distinguished Researcher Fellow at the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO), supporting the Executive in ‘Strategic Research/National and International Collaborations & Partnerships’.
He is now Head of Research & Development at Sustainable Oil Recovery & Remediation (SORR), a rapidly growing international enterprise dedicated to the application of sustainable solutions for the prevention and remediation of environmental disasters. SORR is member of ANSTO’s Innovation Centre with ready access to Australia’s largest infrastructure in science/engineering and its large international institutional partners.
Richard Banati is pro bono Chair & Medical Director of MothersMilkBank-Charity (est. 2009), Australia’s first community-based milk bank. Here, too, his focus is on improving preparedness for emergencies, notably those environmental spills that increasingly threaten maternal health and early infant nutrition.
